Professor Ja-Ling Wu

Topic:

The Interaction between Media Computing and Social Computing : RoleNet: (Movie Analysis from the Perspective of Social Network )

Abstract:
Biography:

Professor Wu received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tatung Institute of Technology (now Tatung University) in 1986. After completing his Ph.D., he was appointed associate professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tatung Institute of Technology. After one year at Tatung Institute of Technology, he became associate professor at the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Taiwan University (NTU). In August 1990, he was promoted to full professor at NTU. During the founding year of National Chi Nan University in 1996, Professor Wu contributed to the planning and founding of its Computer Science and Information Engineering department, and therefore, was appointed as the department Chair.

Professor Wu was one of the key founding members of the Communications and Multimedia Laboratory (CMLab) at NTU in 1991. Not only is CMLab the earliest and largest multimedia research lab in Taiwan (currently with over 100 Master and Ph.D. students), it has made the greatest research contributions in multimedia research in Taiwan. Due to its research excellence, CMLab has gained international reputation as one of the key multimedia research centers in the world. Also due to its excellent performance in both academic research and academic-industry collaboration, Professor Wu was asked to plan for the new Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia (GINM) in May 2000. After four years of planning and preparation, NTU GINM officially started to admit graduate students in July 2004. At the same time, Professor Wu became the first Head of NTU GINM. In November 2006, Professor Wu was promoted to the Lifetime Distinguished Professor at NTU. From August 2007 to July 2008, Professor Wu was appointed as the Chair Professor sponsored by Silicon Integrated System (SIS) Corporation.

In January 2008, Professor Wu received the prestigious IEEE Fellow award for his contributions to image and video analysis, coding, digital watermarking, and rights management. In November 2008, Professor Wu received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Tatung University for his outstanding achievement. In 2009, Professor Wu and the CMLab received the highest award in computer science in Taiwan ¡V the IICM (Institute of Information & Computing Machinery) ¡§Computer Science Award¡¨.

Professor Wu¡¦s research focuses are on the following three areas (also according to time ordering): Video compression, Digital watermarking, and Digital content analysis.

Video compression was Prof. Wu¡¦s earliest research focus. It has also been the area where the most significant contributions were made in the number of supervised Ph.D. students and technology transfers from academic-industry collaboration. Particularly noted that Professor Wu, during his sabbatical leave (1998/8 ¡V 1999/7) from NTU, took up the CTO position of CyberLink Corp. During this time, he led the development of several world-renown multimedia software such as ¡§PowerDVD¡¨ that currently holds 1/3 of the global market share in software DVD players.

Digital watermarking was Prof. Wu¡¦s foremost research area receiving the greatest international recognition. Prof. Wu and his students were the first in proposing the concept of ¡§visually recognizable patterns¡¨ for digital watermarking. >From this concept came the creation of the first invisible watermarking technology, which was also published in the IEEE Transaction on Image Processing, Jan. 1999. This paper made vast impact in academics with over 600 citations on Google scholar. Prof. Wu received the ISI award for Taiwan highly cited papers (1991-2000) - the ¡§2000 Best Paper Citation Award of Taiwan¡¨.

Digital content analysis was Professor Wu¡¦s recent research area. He moved into this area from collaboration with Taiwan¡¦s digital content industry and learning most graduates in electrical engineering and computer science lack creativity and artistic backgrounds. His recent effort has produced some outstanding results. For examples, Prof. Wu and his students developed the ¡§Tiling Slideshow¡¨ system which provides a novel experience for users to browse digital photos. This work was published at the ACM Multimedia conference (the most selective conference in multimedia) in 2006 and received the Best Paper award at the conference.

Professor Wu has published over 300 international journals and conference papers (for a complete list of publications, please see http://www.cmlab.csie.ntu.edu.tw/cml/dsp/prof-wu/publication.htm). He received the Outstanding Research award from the National Science Council (NSC) three times in 1998, 2000 and 2004, respectively. He received the Outstanding Scholar award from the National Research Council (NSC) in 2008.

Professor Wu has made outstanding contributions in pushing for stronger industry-academic collaboration. Since NSC started the calling for industry-academic collaboration projects in 1992, Professor Wu and his team have continuously participated in NSC industry-academic collaboration projects for over 16 years. Results from the industry-academic collaboration projects have not only produced many talented graduates in multimedia but also secured over NT 100 million research funding for NTU. Such achievements presented Professor Wu with the ¡§Outstanding Computer Science Scholar¡¨ award in 1993, the ¡§Long-Term Outstanding Researcher¡¨ award in 1996, the ¡§Outstanding Industry-Academic Collaboration Result¡¨ award from Ministry of Education in 1998, and the ¡§Outstanding Electrical Engineering Professor¡¨ award from the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering in 2005. Since August 2008, Professor Wu has been appointed the Director of the office of the Industry-Academic Collaboration Promotion and continued his effort for promoting industry-academic collaboration. In 2009, Professor received the TECO Award (one of the most prestigious awards sponsored by Taiwan¡¦s (EE and CS Industrial Associations) for his excellent achievement in both academic research and academic-industry collaboration.
